How Do I …
Update/Change License Information?
Customers are allowed one free name or address change during the term of their original driver's license/permit/ID card.
To change your address a second time or subsequent time, there will be a $10 fee. If you are within 150 days of the expiration date of your license, you will be required to renew your license.
If you have a digital Driver's License and ID it will automatically update when you renew/update your physical card as well as for birthdays and driver status changes; no action is required on your device.
Address Changes
DDS is strengthening our protocols for Online Address Changes to curtail fraudsters who try to take advantage of online processes.
Note: All Non-US citizen must come into a Customer Service Center for all driver’s license/permit/ID card transactions.
Ways to Change Your Address
To initiate an Address Change, customers may choose one of the three options below:
- Create a DDS Online Account then use the secure integrated video verification. This method is available 24 hours a day / 7 days a week. (Fastest option)
OR
- Visit any DDS Customer Service Center, bring one document with your name as well as the new address on it, and be prepared to take a photo.
OR
- Create a DDS Online Account then call the DDS Contact Center at (678)-413-8858 to conduct a secure video verification. Contact Center hours are Monday-Friday 8 am to 5 pm. Please note that you may experience a long delay due to high call volume.
Timeframe to Update Your Address
- New Residents are required to update the address on their license, permit, or ID within 30 days of moving to Georgia.
- Existing GA License/ID holders have 60 days to change their address.
Allow up to 30 days for the license to be delivered.
Eligibility Requirements
To change your address, you must:
- Be a U.S. citizen.
- Be a Georgia resident.
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Hold a REAL ID license or ID (gold or black star in the upper right corner).
Required Documents
What you need depends on whether you already hold a REAL ID license/ID:
- If you already have a REAL ID license/ID (gold or black star in the upper right corner):
Bring one (1) document proving your new residential address. - If you do not have a REAL ID license/ID: You must bring the full set of REAL ID documents, including two (2) proof of residency documents.
- Ensure all documentation is postdated within the last 6 months.
- Also, be prepared to take a photo.
Acceptable Proof of Residency Documents
Bring 2 from any of the following document categories:
The two (2) documents must be from separate sources or separate accounts (please redact account numbers). Also, documents must be postdated within the last 6 months to be eligible for use.
The documents must show your name and current residential address. P.O. Boxes do not prove residency.
- Household Information – From a current or preceding calendar year – Mortgage, payment coupon, signed lease agreement, deed, HUD settlement statement, escrow statement, property tax bill, Homeowners insurance policy or premium bill, title search documentation, or Military housing agreement letter. Current (dated within the past six (6) months) valid rental contract/agreement, rent payment receipt for a home, apartment, mobile home, dorm, extended-stay motel.
- Any physical postmarked mail delivered by the U.S.P.S. dated within the past six (6) months
- Documents Issued by Federal, State, or Local Governments – From a current or preceding calendar year – Social Security documentation, Annual Benefits statement, Numident record, Social Security check. Government assistance documents such as Medicare, Medicaid, unemployment insurance claims, Disability, WIC, Georgia or Federal Income Tax Return or refund check, Voter Registration card, unexpired firearms license, unexpired Merchant Marine license, I-797A, I-797C, correspondence from DDS, USPS Change of Address confirmation, Jury Summons, Military discharge benefit statement, and other documents issued by Federal/State/Municipal government.
- Financial Statements - Dated within the past six (6) months, please redact account numbers. Financial statement for bank/credit union account, investment account, credit card account, or loan/credit financing.
- Utility Bills – Dated within the past six (6) months. Utility bill for services installed at your residential address (water, sewer, gas, electricity, cable/satellite TV, Internet, telephone/cell phone, or garbage collection). Please redact the account numbers.
- Motor Vehicle Information – Vehicle Registration or Title, Insurance policy, or Insurance Card with the address displayed for the current year or dated within the past six (6) months.
- Employer Documentation – From current or preceding calendar year – Employer verification including paycheck, paycheck stub, a letter from employer on company letterhead, or W-2 form.
- School Records – School record/transcript for the current or prior school year, report card, student loan documentation, or form DS-1.
- Medical Statements – From a current or preceding calendar year – Health insurance statement, explanation of benefits (EOB) for a claim, or a health care bill/invoice.
- Other accepted documents: Georgia Department of Community Supervision Residence Verification Form; Refugee Address Verification Affidavit (DS-20); letter from a shelter, half-way house, or other similar facilities on letterhead, dated within the past six (6) months. **Accepted as stand-alone proof of residency.
Name Changes
Applicant name changes must be processed, in person, at a Customer Service Center. Applicants are required to update the name listed on their driver's license/permit/ID card within 60 days, as required by law.
- For current GA Customers:
- If the applicant's name has changed from the original birth record or passport, the applicant is required to present certified legal documents supporting each name change. Supporting documents include a marriage certificate, divorce decree, adoption papers, and/or legal name change.
- NOTE: All name change documents are required for new and new to GA customers.
- All documents must be in English.
- Applicants whose surnames have changed by reason of marriage may obtain a driver's license/permit/ID card in the hyphenated married surname upon submission of a certified copy of a marriage license application or state-issued marriage certificate for the marriage.
- All applicants who have changed their surname due to marriage must present a Social Security card or an official letter from the Social Security Administration verifying the name change.
- If presenting a divorce decree, it must contain a name-change order which will serve as legal proof of your intended name change.
- Be prepared to take a photo.
Physical Changes
Applicants are required to update physical details, listed below, in person at a Customer Service Center:
- Weight
- Height
- Eye Color
- Gender
Note:
- For a Gender update, a court order or physician's letter certifying the gender change is required.
- The letter or court order shall state the person's name, date of birth, date of gender reassignment operation, and other identifying information.
- There is a $10.00 fee for a gender change.
