Non-Domiciled CLPs and Non-Domiciled CDLs

The U.S. Department of Transportation announced an emergency interim final rule to strengthen federal oversight of how states issue non-domiciled commercial learner’s permits (CLPs) and commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs). The rule comes in response to a nationwide review conducted by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) revealing widespread non-compliance state driver licensing agencies and a troubling series of fatal crashes caused by nondomiciled CDL holders.

Medical Certificates Become Automated

Beginning June 18, 2025, all CDL Medical Certificates must be submitted directly to FMCSA by the CDL customer’s Medical Examiner.

Opt-In/Out of Electronic Notification Reminders

Georgia’s 2024 legislation enhances drivers’ convenience across the state! This law allows drivers to opt in for electronic reminders for state issued ID and/or driver’s license renewal(s). Drivers will receive timely notifications via email and/or text to ensure that a renewal date is never missed. Note: You will be asked to log in to your account.

New Rules for Changing an Address

Customers are allowed one free name or address change during the term of their original driver's license/permit/ID card.

To change your address a second time or subsequent time, there will be a $10 fee. If you are within 150 days of the expiration date of your license, you will be required to renew your license.

Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse Status & CDL Downgrades

Beginning July 1, 2024, the Georgia Department of Driver Services will begin removing the commercial driving privileges (downgrade) from the driver's license of customers that are “prohibited” until the driver completes the return-to-duty (RTD) process.
