Driver Training Program
Driver Training Overview
A Driver Training School provides driver education courses approved by the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) to help individuals meet the requirements for obtaining a Class C motor vehicle license in Georgia. These courses include:
- 30-hour classroom and 6-hour behind-the-wheel instruction
- 30-hour classroom-only instruction
- 6-hour behind-the-wheel-only instruction
- Approved online courses
Individuals interested in becoming a certified Driver Training School Program or Instructor will be subjected to the following rules and regulations:

Becoming a Driver Training School Owner
Who Can Become a Driver Training School Owner?
Any person, partnership, limited liability company, corporation, public high school program, or local government entity providing driving instruction to 10 or more persons per calendar year to assist them in obtaining a Class C driver’s license in Georgia qualifies. This also includes public school systems offering driver training as part of the regular school day curriculum at no cost to students.

Requirements

- Completed Driver Training School Application
- All applicants (owners, partners, corporate officers, controlling stockholders, and/or high school directors) must:
- Complete GAPS fingerprinting for a national and state criminal background check
- Submit a certified Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) from each state (except Georgia) where licensed in the past 5 years
- $25 non-refundable application fee
- Surety Bond with a $10,000 principal sum for each location, naming Georgia DDS as the obligee
- Certificate of Liability Insurance ($100,000/$300,000/$50,000 coverage), listing Georgia DDS as the Certificate Holder
- Fire Code Inspection Report (completed by local fire marshal or agent, not over 90 days old)
- Copy of unexpired Business License (not required for public school systems)
- Certificate of Incorporation from the Secretary of State or Trade Name form from the local County Clerk (Corporations and LLCs are considered incorporated; others require the Trade Name form)
- Driver Training Instructor Application(s) with all required supporting documents
- Paid receipt for student textbooks and curriculum materials

- How to Drive - AAA Traffic Safety
- Responsible Driving - Glencoe/McGraw Hill
- License to Drive - Alliance for Safe Driving
- Public School Systems Only: A notarized statement from the superintendent or assistant superintendent appointing a director responsible for daily operations

- To be considered for certification, please submit your information and required supporting documentation online by completing this application. All required supporting documents must be attached to the application online before it is submitted. Paper applications are no longer accepted

Driver Training School Recertification
Overview
Driver Training School certification is valid for up to four (4) years. Owners should apply for recertification within 60-90 days of expiration.

- Completed Program Recertification Application
- All applicants (owners, partners, corporate officers, controlling stockholders, and/or high school directors) must:
- Complete GAPS fingerprinting for a national and state criminal background check
- Submit a certified MVR from each state (except Georgia) where licensed in the past 5 years
- Continuation or Verification certificate for the existing Surety Bond
- $25 non-refundable application fee
- Certificate of Liability Insurance ($100,000/$300,000/$50,000 coverage for Driver Training vehicles), listing Georgia DDS as the Certificate Holder
- If applicable, a list of active Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with external entities
- Public School Systems Only: A notarized statement from the superintendent or assistant superintendent appointing a director responsible for daily operations

Becoming a Driver Training Instructor
Who Can Become a Driver Training Instructor?
Any person employed by a certified Driver Training School to provide driving instruction for students seeking a Class C motor vehicle license in Georgia qualifies. Individuals interested in becoming a certified Driver Training Instructor will be subject to the following rules and regulations: Driver Training Rules and Regulations.

- Completed New Instructor Application
- $30 non-refundable application fee
- National and state fingerprint-based criminal background check
- Certified MVR from each state (except Georgia) where licensed in the past 5 years
- Notarized employment letter (on school letterhead) signed by a DDS-certified Driver Training School owner within 90 days of applying
- Lab report from an accredited laboratory for a drug screen (marijuana, cocaine, opiates, amphetamines, and phencyclidine) completed within 30 days of applying
- Completion and passing of the DDS-administered instructor training and examination
