Obtaining a Class M Motorcycle License in Georgia

To operate a motorcycle or motor-driven cycle in Georgia, you need a Class M license or a Class M Instructional Permit (MP). A motorcycle is defined as a motor vehicle with:

  • A saddle for the rider
  • Handlebar controls
  • Up to three wheels in contact with the ground
  • Excluding tractors and mopeds (engine size 50cc or less)

Georgia law classifies all motorcycles and motor-driven cycles, including scooters, motorbikes, motor tricycles, and mini-bikes with engines 51cc or larger, under one category.

You can obtain a Class M license in two ways:

  1. Motorcycle Safety Program Course: Complete a professional training course with provided motorcycles. Successful completion grants a 90-day Motorcycle License Test Waiver, bypassing the knowledge and on-cycle skills tests at a DDS Customer Service Center (CSC).
  2. Direct Application at a DDS CSC: Pass a knowledge test, an on-cycle skills test, and a vision test (waivable if passed within the past year for another issuance). You must provide your own motorcycle.

For more details on motorcycle testing, refer to the Motorcycle Operators Manual in the resources section.
