Parents are vital to helping teenagers be safe drivers.

To commemorate National Teen Driver Safety Week, October 15 through 21, Department of Driver Services (DDS) is supporting the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) campaign that encourages the parents of teen drivers to continue talking about safe driving and provides advice on how to set the rules before their teens hit the road.

As Chair of the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) International Board of Directors, DDS Commissioner Spencer R. Moore is committed to reducing highway fatalities especially with young drivers.

"Parents, be the driving force behind safer roads and wiser choices. Start the conversation today to steer your teens towards a lifetime of responsible and safe driving. Your words can be the seatbelt that protects them on the road to a brighter future,” said DDS Commissioner Spencer R. Moore.

Parents should talk to their teens about:

  • the dangers of drug and alcohol use
  • distracted driving
  • cell phone use
  • obeying all laws and regulations
