    We offer different types of Road Tests, so please be aware of your specific test's requirements by reviewing the information below before scheduling an appointment.

    Road Test Requirements by Type
    • Teen Driver Road Test (Under 18)

      Walk-ins are not accepted; you must schedule an appointment and meet the following requirements:

      • Fulfill all Class D License requirements—see Class D Provisional License for documents and bring all listed items.
      • Be accompanied by a licensed driver aged 21 or older; only the applicant and this driver are allowed in the vehicle.
      • No other minors, children, or pets are permitted in the vehicle during the test.

      Vehicle Requirements

      • Bring a paper copy of the vehicle registration and a current valid insurance card.
      • For rental cars, the applicant’s name must be on the rental agreement.
      • If the vehicle has temporary tags or was purchased within the last 30 days, provide a bill of sale.
      • The vehicle must pass a DDS safety inspection before the test.
    • Drivers 18 and Over Road Test

      Walk-ins are not accepted; you must schedule an appointment and meet the following requirements:

      • Hold a valid Georgia Non-Commercial Learner’s Permit.
      • Sign an affidavit confirming 40 hours of supervised road driving, including 6 hours at night.
      • Pass the Driver’s License knowledge exam.
      • Be accompanied by a licensed driver aged 21 or older; only the applicant and this driver are allowed in the vehicle.
      • No children or pets are permitted in the vehicle during the test.
      • Customers with suspended licenses are not eligible to test.

      Vehicle Requirements

      • Bring a paper copy of the vehicle registration and a current valid insurance card.

      • The vehicle must pass a DDS safety inspection before the test.
    • Motorcycle Skills Test

      Walk-ins are not accepted; testing is available on limited days and times at DDS Customer Service Centers (see Center Map for locations). Requirements include:

      • Hold a valid Georgia Motorcycle Permit (MP); otherwise, you will not be tested.
      • Be at least 17 years old.
      • Fulfill all Class M License requirements—see Class M Motorcycle License for documents.
      • Customers with suspended licenses are not eligible to test.
      • Exemption: Completing an approved license waiver motor safety course waives written and skills tests.

      Motorcycle Requirements

      • Bring motorcycle registration/proof of ownership and valid insurance.
      • If the cycle has temporary tags or was purchased within the last 30 days, provide a bill of sale.
      • The motorcycle must pass a safety inspection.
    • Commercial (CDL) Road Test

      Walk-ins are not accepted; all tests are by appointment only at select locations: 

      • Albany
      • Between
      • Brunswick
      • Cumming (no Class A CDL)
      • Dalton
      • Douglasville
      • Forsyth
      • Gainesville
      • Milledgeville
      • Rome
      • Thomson

      Requirements include:

      • Complete Download this pdf file. Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) before testing or adding a Hazmat endorsement for the first time (effective February 7, 2022, for Class A/B CDL, upgrades, or S/P/H endorsements).
      • Hold a valid Georgia driver’s license and CDL learner's permit (AP, BP) and maintain the CDL learner’s permit for a minimum of 14 days before taking the skills test.
      • Bring a paper copy of the vehicle registration, valid insurance card, and Medical Certificate (if applicable).
      • If the vehicle has temporary tags or was purchased within the last 30 days, provide a bill of sale.
      • The vehicle must pass a DDS safety inspection.

      • Arrive 20 minutes early; late arrivals may lead to rescheduling.
      • Customers with suspended licenses are not eligible until reinstatement requirements are met.
      • Commercial road tests require a $50 non-transferable fee per attempt, payable in advance (credit cards online; cash at a Customer Service Center with a paper receipt).

      Note: A 72-hour notice is required to reschedule or cancel CDL appointments, or the fee is forfeited, and a new $50 fee will be required.

    Important Notes for Appointments

    • Appointments are required only for behind-the-wheel Automobile, CDL, or Motorcycle Road Tests.

    • Non-commercial road tests are offered virtually (via dual-facing camera and hands-free device with a licensed adult 21+ in the vehicle).
    • Testing may be suspended due to inclement weather, equipment failure, or other uncontrollable circumstances.

    • Same-day appointments are not available due to resource management.

  • Online License/ID/Permit Form

    All customers must submit the required Online License/ID/Permit Form prior to visiting a center. Please fill out this application form and then schedule your Road Test in the next step.

  • Schedule or Modify Appointment

    Use this appointment scheduling tool to book an Automobile, Motorcycle, or CDL Road Test (CDL tests after 4:00 PM are for partial skills only), or to modify/cancel an appointment using your appointment number and email, noting that the Customer Service Center may reschedule if requirements aren’t met or duplicates are found.
