Adding CDL Endorsements

CDL applications are required to take and pass additional tests to operate specific types of commercial vehicles.  

New Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT)

 

Note: Beginning February 7, 2022, ALL entry-level drivers will be subject to the requirements in the FMCSA Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) regulations. This includes drivers applying for a Class A or B for the first time, upgrading an existing CDL to a higher class, or adding a new School Bus, Passenger, or Hazmat Endorsement.

The following tests are required when adding endorsements to your Commercial License:

Note: The P, S, and N endorsement exams can be taken with the Commercial learner’s permit test.  The T, H, and X endorsement exams require applicants to have a valid Commercial Driver's License.

  • P - Passenger Endorsement

    • Requires Knowledge and Skills Tests
    • Valid for CDL Class A, B, C
  • S - School Bus Endorsement

    • Requires Knowledge and Skills Tests
    • Valid for CDL Class A, B, C

  • T - Double/Triple Trailer Endorsement

    • Requires Knowledge Test only
    • Valid for CDL Class A
    • Not eligible for a CLP. The applicant must have a valid Commercial Driver’s License.
  • N - Tanker Endorsement

    • Requires Knowledge Test only
    • Valid for CDL Class A, B
  • H - Hazmat Endorsement

    • Requires Knowledge Test only
    • Valid for CDL Class A, B, C
    • Pass TSA Background Check
    • Fingerprints are required for 1st-time issuance as well as renewals.

    • Not eligible for a CLP. The applicant must have a valid Commercial Driver’s License.
  • X - Hazmat & Tanker Combination

    • Requires Knowledge Test Only
    • Valid for CDL Class A, B, C
    • Not eligible for a CLP. The applicant must have a valid Commercial Driver’s License.
