Medical Certification Integration Final Rule, National Registry II

Medical Certification Integration Final Rule, Official Notice

The Regulatory Compliance Division of Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) is excited to announce the upcoming implementation of the Medical Certification Integration Final Rule, National Registry II (NRII).  This initiative is part of our ongoing commitment to improve services, enhance user experience, and increase efficiency.

Please understand and be advised of the following:

  • 80 FR 22790 requires (1) Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to electronically transmit from the National Registry to the State Driver’s Licensing Agencies (SDLAs) the driver identification information, examination results, and restriction information from examinations performed for holders of CLPs/CDLs (interstate and intrastate); (2) FMCSA to transmit electronically to the SDLAs the medical variance information for all CMV drivers; and (3) SDLAs to post the driver identification, examination results, and restriction information received electronically from FMCSA.
  • Effective Monday, February 24, 2025, DDS will no longer accept medical certificates directly from CMV drivers in any form, i.e., mailed, paper, faxed, online or in-person at our Customer Service Centers.  To streamline the process, all medical certificates will be submitted electronically to DDS via FMCSA.
  • To ensure a smooth transition to NRII, please ensure that any current supporting medical documentation is sent via email, uploaded through our Online Services, or presented in-person at our local Customer Service Center by Wednesday, February 19, 2025.
  • CMV drivers will still be required to maintain valid medical examination certificates, however, they will no longer bring those certifications to the Customer Service Centers or upload them through our Online Services.   With the implementation of NRII, medical providers will input the medical information into the National Registry, and FMCSA will then transmit it to DDS.
  • Please allow 48 business hours from your medical examination before checking the status of new or updated medical certifications via Online Services.

There are more positive changes to come.  If you have any questions, you may email Regulatory Compliance at [email protected]
