Georgia Motorcycle Safety Program Urges Safe Winter Riding This Holiday Season
Many Georgia motorcyclists continue riding through the winter months. The Georgia Motorcycle Safety Program (GMSP) reminds riders to stay safe, warm, and alert with these winter riding tips.
“As winter weather arrives, we urge all motorists—especially motorcyclists—to slow down, stay alert, and adjust their driving for colder temperatures, reduced visibility, and changing road conditions,” said Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) Commissioner Angelique B. McClendon. “Motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable during the winter months, and it is critical all drivers remain attentive, share the road responsibly, and give one another the space needed to arrive safely. Safe driving is a shared responsibility, and every decision behind the wheel can save a life.”
Gear Up for the Cold and Plan Ahead:
Wear a full-face helmet and water-resistant riding gear. Use a three-layer approach—thermal base layer, breathable middle layer, and a protective outer jacket. Insulated gloves help maintain warmth and control.
Check the weather forecast, avoid peak holiday traffic, and stick to familiar, well-lit routes. Use traffic apps for real-time updates on road conditions.
Inspect Your Motorcycle:
Cold weather affects tire pressure and batteries. Check tires, lights, and overall bike condition before riding.
Watch for Road Hazards:
Ice, wet roads, and road salt can reduce traction. Avoid riding in icy or snowy conditions and stay cautious near holiday events with increased pedestrian traffic.
Stay Alert:
Holiday travel increases the risk of distracted and impaired drivers. Maintain safe distances, avoid blind spots, and consider limiting riding during late-night hours.
GMSP Manager Holly Hegyesi reminds riders, “Alcohol and riding don’t mix. If you plan to drink this holiday season, arrange a sober ride home through a friend or rideshare service.”
Motorcyclists are encouraged to refresh their skills and learn the latest safety techniques by enrolling in a RiderCourse at a DDS location or with a Certified Private Partner.
