Georgia Department of Driver Services Awarded Grant Dedicated to Teen Driver Safety
Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) is pleased to announce it has received a grant totaling $540,000 from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS). The grant timeframe for this award will be October 1, 2025 to September 30 of 2026.
This funding will help finance the modernization of eADAP – the online Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program (eADAP) required for all teen drivers before taking an on-the-road test. This class emphasizes the deadly combination of driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs and is typically taught in ninth grade health class in high school.
As a customer convenience, students may select an online option for obtaining this mandated education. eADAP is an internet-based version of the traditional classroom course, which is designed for qualifying teens that are otherwise not able to take the traditional ADAP course through their school. This is particularly helpful for home school students and students that need access to a make-up class. Public and private school students can register through their School Administrator. Home school students can register directly with DDS.
This financing will allow a technology upgrade to add eADAP to the Driver Record and Integrated Vehicle Enterprise System (DRIVES) -- the system used by DDS, the Department of Revenue, and the County Tag Offices to process driver’s licenses and motor vehicle title and registration transactions.
“Innovative projects like this are designed with the intent for Georgia and our nation to reach the realistic goal of zero traffic deaths by the middle of this century,” said Allen Poole, Director of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. “Each life saved on our roads is one less family that will have to live with the pain of losing a loved one whose life was taken from them in a traffic crash that was completely preventable”
This upgrade will make eADAP data easier to track a student’s progress and completion which will be extremely helpful for DDS Customers Service Centers when verifying eligibility before a teen’s license issuance. DRIVES will configure new exam types for all learning modules and quizzes and can configure new reports to track enrollment and pass/fail rates.
“We are grateful to the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety for their continued grant support, which makes it possible for DDS to enhance the technology behind our eADAP program. This upgrade will allow us to deliver an even more engaging and efficient learning experience for Georgia teens as they complete this important step toward earning their driver’s license and becoming safe, responsible drivers.”
