The Department of Driver Services (DDS) Commissioner Spencer R. Moore recently welcomed Governor Brian P. Kemp to the Conyers licensing center to renew his Georgia driver’s license. The Governor experienced the same renewal process as his constituents, including completing the application for renewal before arriving via Skip-A-Step. An average license renewal takes approximately ten minutes from the time a customer reaches the counter, and the Governor’s visit was no exception. Governor Kemp visited the center in-person and presented the appropriate documentation to ensure that his new license is compliant with the REAL ID Act.

Passed by Congress in 2005, the REAL ID Act complies with the 9/11 Commission’s recommendation that the federal government “set standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver’s licenses.” The Act established minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards and prohibits federal agencies from accepting licenses and identification cards from states that do not meet these standards for official purposes, such as at airport security checkpoints. The regulations established the deadline of October 1, 2020 to ensure full enforcement of the REAL ID Act. Georgia has been in compliance with the REAL ID Act since 2012, and more than 96% of residents already have a compliant ID.

“I commend Commissioner Spencer R. Moore and DDS for their commitment to customer service and security. Thanks to their hard work, the renewal process is quick and efficient, which I saw firsthand. I encourage Georgians to check their IDs for compliance and take advantage of this user-friendly process,” said Governor Kemp.

The Governor thanked the Conyers Team for their hard work and customer service. Commissioner Moore commented, “I appreciated the opportunity to have the Governor experience our customer service firsthand.  We are very proud to be issuing the most secure license that our state has ever produced in a fast and efficient manner.”
