COVID-19 Extension FAQs

  • General
    • My license, ID, or permit is expiring soon.  Do I need to come in?  In most cases, your license, ID, or permit will be automatically extended and sent to you.  See the remaining questions to determine if you are eligible for an automatic extension.  If you are eligible, you do not need to take any action to receive the extension.  If you are not eligible, or if you need to update information on your card such as your address, you may be able to use DDS Online Services.
    • I plan to fly soon and I do not have my automatic extension yet.  Will my license / ID still work at a security checkpoint? According to the Transportation Security Administration website (https://www.tsa.gov/coronavirus), the TSA will accept expired licenses or IDs if they have expired on or after March 1, 2020.  TSA will accept expired licenses or IDs a year after expiration or 120 days after the duration of the emergency, whichever is longer.  For more information, please visit the TSA website.
    • I am new to the State of Georgia.  How can I get a Georgia license while the centers are closed? Retain the license that you were issued from the state you are moving from until our centers reopen.

  • Customers Age 60 and Over
    • My license, ID, or permit expires soon.  Am I eligible for an automatic extension?  Yes.  Your license, ID, or permit will be automatically extended for 120 days if it has an expiration date between March 1, 2020, and June 30, 2020, if it is not a learner’s permit (Class CP).  This extension will be provided to you free of charge and will arrive in the mail within 30 days.

  • Commercial Drivers (CDL / CLP)
    • I hold a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP).  Am I eligible for an automatic extension? Yes.  Your CDL / CLP will be automatically extended for 120 days if it has an expiration date between March 14, 2020, and June 30, 2020.  This extension will be provided to you free of charge and will arrive in the mail within 30 days.  All endorsements will remain on your license or permit.
    • My CDL self-certification status requires that I keep an updated medical certificate or other medical documents on file with DDS.  What if my documents will expire soon?  Your medical certification and any medical documents will be extended along with the term of your license/permit.  This includes all medical certificates, waivers, and Skills Performance Evaluations (SPE).
    • I have a Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) Endorsement.  Will my endorsement be valid? Yes. When your license is extended, your Hazmat privilege will also be extended for the same time.

  • Customers Age 59 and Under
    • My license, ID, or permit expires soon.  Am I eligible for an automatic extension?  Yes.  Your license, ID, or permit will be automatically extended for 120 days if it has an expiration date between March 14, 2020, and June 30, 2020, if it is not a learner’s permit (Class CP).  This extension will be provided to you free of charge and will arrive in the mail within 30 days.

  • Change of Address
    • My automatic extension may be sent to an address at which I no longer receive mail.  How can I get a license mailed to me?  Click DDS Online Services to change your address and have a card delivered to your new address.

  • Teen Drivers / Learner’s Permit Holders
    • I hold a Provisional Driver’s License (Class D).  Am I eligible for an automatic extension? No.  Your license will not be automatically extended.  However, if you are 18 years of age or older, you can upgrade your license to a Class C online.
    • I hold a Learner’s Permit (Class CP). Am I eligible for an automatic extension? No.  Your permit will not be automatically extended.

  • Non-Citizens
    • I am not a U.S. Citizen. Am I eligible for an automatic extension? Yes.  Your license, ID, or permit will be automatically extended for 120 days if it has an expiration date between March 14, 2020, and June 30, 2020, if it is not a learner’s permit (Class CP).  This extension will be provided to you free of charge and will arrive in the mail within 30 days.  This extension will be provided regardless of the expiration date on the immigration documents you provided to DDS.
    • I am currently holding a 120-day temporary extension license / ID / permit because my immigration application is in process and I am waiting for new documents.  Am I eligible for an automatic extension? Yes.  Your 120-day temporary card will be automatically extended for an additional 120 days if it has an expiration date between March 14, 2020, and June 30, 2020, if it is not a learner’s permit (Class CP).  This extension will be provided to you free of charge and will arrive in the mail within 30 days.

  • Motorcycle
    • My license contains a motorcycle privilege (classes such as CM, M, etc.), or I have a motorcycle permit (Class MP).  Am I eligible for an automatic extension? Yes.  Your motorcycle license or permit will be automatically extended for 120 days if it has an expiration date between March 14, 2020, and June 30, 2020.  This extension will be provided to you free of charge and will arrive in the mail within 30 days.

  • Ignition Interlock Limited Permits
    • My limited permit has a restriction requiring an ignition interlock device (IID) to be installed in my vehicle.  Am I eligible for an automatic extension?  Yes.  Your limited permit will be automatically extended for 120 days if it has an expiration date between March 14, 2020 and June 30, 2020.  This extension will be provided to you free of charge and will arrive in the mail within 30 days.  However, please note that this does not automatically extend any service contracts with your interlock device provider.

  • Other
    • Will my license be suspended for failing to appear in court during the Public Health Emergency?  Due to court closures customers with pending FTA (Failure to Appear) suspensions cannot resolve their FTA with the court.  These suspensions will be delayed for an additional 60-days. Please check your driving history through online services for details about your suspension and download DDS 2 Go Mobile App to receive mobile notifications of changes to your driving history.  
    • What if I have been arrested for a DUI and want to request a hearing? If you have been arrested for DUI, Georgia law allows a 45-day delay of a suspension related to the DUI arrest. This 45-day delay will be delayed for an additional 90 days.  Please check your driving history through online services for details about your suspension and download DDS 2 Go Mobile App to receive mobile notifications of changes to your driving history.  
    • What If I have been arrested and want to obtain an Ignition Interlock Limited Driving Permit at a DDS location? Customers who wish to request Ignition Interlock Limited Driving Permits will be granted more time to request the permit.  Arrested for DUI Georgia law allows a 45-day delay of a suspension related to the DUI arrest.  This 45-day delay will be delayed for an additional 90 days.  Please check your driving history through online services for details about your suspension and download DDS 2 Go Mobile App to receive mobile notifications of changes to your driving history.
